As a contract condition of your Parks for People award, you must apply for a Green Flag Award (GFA) for a minimum of five years, starting the year that the capital works are completed. The Green Flag Award team will notify the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) that your application has been made and will provide HLF with results each year (including detailed scoring for each criteria and judges comments). HLF expect all the parks they fund to be of Green Flag Award standard, and to score highly across all Green Flag Award criteria.
We would hope that suitable park projects will also apply for the Green Heritage Site accreditation where available.
When you have been awarded a Parks for People full grant (after Stage 2 and before you start your project) please click here to complete the notification form.
GFA administrators will confirm that they have received your form, and will copy their reply to our parks programme unit in London, where a central log of all GFA applications, results and reports will be maintained for the Parks for People programme. GFA will remind you to make the first GFA application for the year you have given.
If your capital works are delayed or your Project Officer/Park Manager or other details change, you must complete and submit the form again.
If your park does not receive a Green Flag Award, or scores particularly low in some areas we will ask you to review your park management and maintenance, and prepare a plan (timetable and actions) demonstrating how GFA quality standards are to be achieved, or resumed, within the next 6 months.
If you do not achieve a GFA again in the following year you will be considered as not meeting the terms of your Contract (Clause16a : Following completion of the capital works needed to achieve the Approved Purposes you will maintain the Property in good repair and condition) and you must repay to us any Grant that we have paid you (or any smaller amounts we ask you to repay) as stated in your Contract Clause 29d.
