Green Flag Award

Today marks the one-month countdown to a new bus pass concession giving pensioners across the North West free England-wide local bus travel and the opportunity for days out to some of the region's favourite landmarks including many Green Flag Award winning parks and green spaces.

From 1 April, the concession will enable residents aged sixty or over, or eligible disabled residents to travel on any local bus route in England, off-peak, for free. This extends the current entitlement, which in many areas limits free local bus travel solely within a local authority area.

With just a few weeks to go, residents will soon be able to grab a free ticket to ride to places of interest or natural beauty both in their local area and further afield. Bus users could take a trip over their county border, for example, to see sights and attractions across the North West region, which were voted for by residents in last year’s Pride of Place poll. These include:

Manchester United’s Old Trafford football stadium; Werneth Country Park in Tameside; Blackpool’s Grand Theatre; Avenham Park, Preston; St Wilfrid’s Church, Standish; White Nancy at Kerridge, near Macclesfield; Upholland in West Lancashire; Darwen Tower; the Lancaster Canal at Wyre; Rossendale’s Halo sculpture; the historical Barlow Mow pub in Warrington; Ullswater in Cumbria and Park View Playing Fields in Fylde.

And as the scheme is England-wide, eligible bus users can enjoy visiting attractions, accessing services and visiting friends and family across the country too.
