Enjoy the sunset over Ham Hill Country Park as you prepare to spot the stars

Green Flag Award-winning Ham Hill Country Park will soon become the location for a special star-gazing astronomy event.

South Somerset District Council’s Ham Hill Centre will be transformed into an observatory on Tuesday 12 February from 7pm to 9pm when a media show and talk followed by a telescope star session will reveal the mysteries of why stars appear to move, why the moon changes appearance and what causes seasons to change.

The one-off evening kick starts the district council’s countryside events programme this year. Grace Hall, South Somerset District Council’s Education Officer said: ‘We have a really exciting and varied programme of events running at Ham Hill Country Park and at our other countryside sites this year, beginning with this astronomy evening which is open to all ages.

“Other events this year include bushcraft weekends, bat walks, bird watching, wild foods, iron-age weaving, mountain bike tuition, willow craft, bug hunting and the popular Ham Hill Heritage Fayre in September.

“On Tuesday evening we will be looking into the winter night sky and finding out the answers to all of our questions. Anyone who wishes to come along should wear warm clothes as we will be spending time outside –and after our time looking at the stars we will be treated to hot chocolate and homemade cookies.”

To book a place on the evening or to receive a programme of Countryside events contact Debbie Wilson at South Somerset District Council on 01935 462282. Entrance costs £4 for adults and £2 for concessions. The event is suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs.
