The One World Garden is situated next to the Pleasure Gardens at Hylands Park in Chelmsford - 574 acres of Green Flag and Green Heritage Award-winning landscaped parkland.
This stunning addition to the beautiful grounds of Hylands Estate was created in 2007 as a lasting legacy of the World Scout Jamboree. Designed by Chelmsford Borough Council Parks staff and part funded by the Scout Association, Friends of Hylands and The Environment Trust, it tells the story of a child’s journey from childhood to adulthood through a series of ‘garden rooms’ representing the different stages of Scouting. Local craftspeople provided much of the infrastructure, and the planting was carried out with help from local Scouts. Last year, the One World Garden was awarded ‘Best Parks and Gardens Project’ by Horticulture Week’s Landscape and Amenity Awards, 2007.
In this picture a young visitor is fascinated by one of the ‘springs’ which form part of the garden’s water feature. The water feature comprises a number of elements including a ‘stream’ that divides into two and disappears below the ground - one branch draining in a clockwise direction and the other in an anti-clockwise direction, representing the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.
