• Hong Kong Dragon Boat Race will raise cash for charity

An annual boat race inspired by an ancient Chinese sport will sail into a Green Flag Award park this year to raise funds for charity.

The traditional Hong Kong Dragon Boat Race, taking place at Rother Valley Country Park, will see fundraisers in crews of 10 race on 30ft boats.Participants need no previous experience but must gather together at least 10 paddlers and one drummer to beat out a rhythm for fellow paddlers.

The event takes place on Sunday May 18 to raise money for the Antony Nolan Trust, an independent charity for leukaemia sufferers.

The Trust hopes each crew member can raise around £70 – enough money to add one new volunteer to the bone marrow donor register.
