The Civic TrustQueen Elizabeth Country Park will be the setting for a week-long event providing safety information to Year 6 children through a series of scenarios over five days between March 10 and 14.
The event, which has been running for more than 12 years, is organised by East Hampshire District Council, working with a number of partnership agencies and local authorities and also supported by the Junior Citizen website that provides resources and further information for both teachers and pupils.
On arrival the children receive a safety briefing before being organised into small groups, which then take part in eight different scenarios, each lasting approximately 15 minutes. The scenarios are presented by various agencies, including Hampshire County Council’s road safety team, East Hampshire District Council Environmental Services (dog wardens and food safety), Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service, Hampshire Police, Hampshire Ambulance, the Army and British Transport Police.
This year’s event will launch the Thinksafe interactive DVD which is designed to reach those schools that cannot attend an already oversubscribed event. The first film is called ‘The Lost Dog’ and targets Stranger Danger, and was sponsored by Hampshire Police. Mr Jewell is currently in the process of filming ‘Internet safety’ and ‘First Aid’ sections with the project producers, Doherty Associates.
Waitrose (Petersfield) support Thinksafe by providing food for the Thinksafe team, and also a member of staff in the form of Pete Fletcher, who has been involved with the event for a number of years as the ‘stranger’.’ Waitrose have supported the event for the last three years and are currently looking into aspects of the DVD project.
With the introduction of the DVD project there is a hope that Thinksafe can move forward and create a permanent site within the county to provide a wider range of safety awareness and training throughout Hampshire.
