The Civic TrustPlay facilities at Green Flag Award-winning Apex Leisure and Wildlife Park in Sedgemoor are set to get an upgrade following a £23,000 lottery windfall.
The funding awarded to Sedgemoor District Council will be used for two projects - the Play Rangers scheme, and Apex Park Playscape.
Play Rangers aims to include more children in fun activities by using outreach schemes in disadvantaged areas. This will target key parks and gardens where youngsters are faced with barriers to playing, aiming to bring different groups of children together through play activities.
The Apex Park initiative seeks to provide a natural play space by using natural materials including sand, grass and trees and combining them with cutting edge play equipment.
Council spokesman Claire Faun said: “Sedgemoor District Council is thrilled with this award and will be looking forward in the new year to starting on the project plans. The award will mean that Apex Park, as well as being a Green Flag Award park, will also be a much more fun place for children to play.
“The council would also like to take this opportunity to thank Barnardos and Somerset Play Forum for the support they gave us in preparing the successful bid.”
Local communities, and in particular schoolchildren, will be heavily involved in the designing and planning stages of the project, and 900 letters have been sent out informing local residents and schools of the scheme.
