The Green Flag Award team has been inundated by more than 500 applications for a Green Flag Award 2006/7.

This record number of 529 applications represents an increase of 26% in those received last year, yet more evidence of a continued focus on the renaissance of green spaces across the country.

A grand total of 72 applications were also received for a Green Pennant Award, recognising and rewarding high quality green spaces managed by voluntary and community groups.

For the first time, all applications were submitted online, a move which went extremely smoothly. This was pioneered to reduce the amount of paperwork and facilitate the whole process for applicants, especially organisations submitting multiple applications.

The scheme’s application manager, Paul Todd, said: “It is fantastic to see the number of applications increase by 109 this year, meaning more and more people are recognising the huge benefits of providing quality green spaces for the enjoyment of their communities.

“These applications are now being processed ready for judging in May and June when our qualified network of judges will be assessing which of them will make the Green Flag Award grade.

“In the meantime, don’t forget you can find this year’s award winning green spaces on our dedicated website at: http://www.greenflagaward.org.uk which features a comprehensive What’s On Guide to events taking place throughout the year.”

Operation manager Lorraine Scanlon added: “The online application process has been a real success. We have received numerous comments from applicants saying how easy and user-friendly the system has been.”

The Green Flag Award scheme, a key component of the Government’s commitment to create cleaner, safer, greener communities, is the national standard for parks and green spaces. Winners vary from Victorian parks and town centre gardens to nature reserves, country parks and cemeteries. Sites must be judged to be welcoming, safe and well maintained with the strong involvement of the local community.
