The Civic TrustThe Civic Trust is encouraging dog owners to take to their Green Flag Award winning parks in support of National Pet Week which takes place between 29 April and 7 May.
Dogs need regular exercise to stay healthy and happy and sometimes it is difficult to give them the exercise they need due to our demanding, hectic lifestyles. This is why National Pet Week provides the perfect opportunity to devote our attention to our canine friends and show them how special they really are.
Why not get together with other dog owners you know and take to your local park en masse? There will be wagging tails galore as people are encouraged to take part in a Strutt Mutt for charity at Astbury Mere Country Park in Congleton on May 7. There will be two courses and funds raised will go towards the local branch of the RSPCA.
National Pet Week is a registered charity and unique in bringing together the work of animal welfare charities and professional bodies throughout the UK with the common goal of improving the welfare of pets. Each year the responsible pet ownership message is conveyed by the National Pet Week campaign under a central theme. This year it is ‘Your pet – one of the family.’
Caroline Williams, marketing manager for the Green Flag Award scheme commented: “I urge dog owners to take part in this event and devote some extra special time to their pets with a lovely long walk in the open air.
“Green Flag Award winning parks are quality green spaces offering a wealth of facilities and activities to visitors and their furry friends. Find out where those parks are and what facilities and events they have taking place by logging onto our dedicated website at: http://www.greenflagaward.org.uk”
Don’t forget as dog owners you must act in a responsible manner and clean up after your pet using the dog waste bins provided.
If you haven’t any pets of your own, some of our sites have facilities where you can get close to animals. A good example is Green Pennant Award winning Heeley City Farm in Sheffield. Here you can meet large black pigs, Soay sheep, prize winning goats, Fern Chough the Exmoor pony and Molly the Irish moiled cow with her calf, Moonlight. http://www.heeleyfarm.org.uk
