From today, community groups are able to apply for grants from a new £50m Community Spaces programme managed by Groundwork UK on behalf of a consortium of environmental organisations including the Civic Trust.

The Big Lottery Fund is providing the £50m cash pot for the Community Spaces programme under its £234m Changing Spaces initiative to help communities enjoy and improve their local environments.

The lottery funding will allow groups to create or regenerate local spaces to improve the quality of life in their neighbourhoods. Project targets include play areas, community gardens, parks, wildlife areas, ponds, courts and village greens, and pathway improvements. In addition to funding, groups will also benefit from a network of trained facilitators who can help them turn ideas into reality.

The Civic Trust manages the Green Flag Award scheme which last year recognised 554 quality green spaces across England and Wales. Friends groups and other volunteer groups - who play a large part in attaining an award - will be eligible to apply for lottery funding.

Civic Trust Community Spaces Manager Julie Bustos said: “This is a hugely exciting initiative to be involved in. We are appealing to all community groups out there - including friends groups of Green Flag Award winning parks and green spaces - to get their share of funding and boost the fantastic work they are already doing or even spark new ideas to improve their local communities. Don’t hesitate to make the most of this great opportunity to further your cause – log onto http://www.community-spaces.org.uk today!”

Community Spaces will only fund projects in England. Application packs are now available to download from http://www.community-spaces.org.uk or call the hotline on: 0845 3 671 671 or email: Alternatively, contact Julie Bustos on: 0151 231 6916 or
