The Civic TrustThe Civic Trust is encouraging its Green Flag Award winners to support National Nest Box Week, which is launched every year on St Valentine’s Day. The event is now an established part of the ornithological calendar, organised by the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO), Britain’s leading bird research charity.
Come springtime, love is in the air, at least for our garden birds. They will be pairing up and looking for somewhere to build their nests, but there is a housing crisis. Natural nest sites, such as holes in trees and buildings, are fast disappearing as gardens and woods are ‘tidied’ and old houses are repaired.
The aim of National Nest Box Week is to encourage as many people as possible to put up nest boxes in order to help our breeding birds and other wildlife. A selection of Green Flag Award sites has already taken the cause under their wing, for example, visitors to Sandhurst Memorial Park Hall in Berkshire at 10am on Valentine’s Day can make their own wooden nest box and recycled bird feeder to take home. (All those wanting to take part must pre-book) Find out more details on: http://www.greenflagaward.org.uk/events_calendar
Paul Todd, of the Green Flag Award scheme commented: “I urge our Green Flag Award winners to get involved in this national event which is so vital for the survival of our birds. Organising an event to support this would provide a fun occasion for all the family and combine the two things which children really enjoy – creating things and a love of wildlife.”
National Nest Box Week runs from 14 to 21 February.
