Park managers and community groups are today invited to join the list of the nation’s best parks and green spaces by applying for a Green Flag Award.

A record 423 sites across England and Wales were this year awarded a Green Flag during a major ceremony marking the 10th anniversary of the scheme at the International Conference Centre in Birmingham. We are pleased to announce that next year’s award-winning ceremony will be hosted by Leeds City Council.

Parks and Public Space Minister, Kay Andrews said: “The Green Flag Award is the chance for managers across the country to show that their park is one of the best. We all know that good quality green space is a vital part of any sustainable community, providing a space where people can go to relax, play or exercise for free – which can bring all sections of society together.

“Everyone should be able to enjoy well managed and maintained green spaces. The Award makes it clear just how important this is. We’ve seen the number of winners increase from year to year – evidence of the ongoing renaissance of our parks - and the challenge is for others to make their green space a Green Flag winner.”

Applications Manager Paul Todd said: “A Green Flag Award brings national recognition, recognising and rewarding those who have devoted much time and effort to providing these quality green spaces which are a key ingredient to revitalising our towns, cities and villages - a vital component of what the Civic Trust is all about.”

Applicants are judged against eight categories: a feeling of welcome, health and safety, maintenance, sustainability, conservation and heritage, community involvement, marketing and management. The scheme is open to any parks or green spaces freely accessible to the public, ranging from allotments, nature reserves and crematoriums to large country parks hosting major events.
