CABE Space has launched a programme of travel scholarships to inject design awareness and good practice into the professions that create and manage urban public space.

The CABE Space design skills scholarships target people without design training, whose work has an impact on the quality of public space - from parks and squares, to streets and highways. The scheme offers grants to fund work or study trips to places where fellow professionals deliver high quality design. The scholarships, to be taken in 2008, will enable up to six people to experience good practice first hand.

Sarah Gaventa, Director of CABE Space said: “Good design should be at the heart of our public realm. Unlike some other countries, people working to shape these public spaces in England – including highways engineers and planners, park managers and access officers – often don’t receive any formal design training. We’re launching the design skills scholarships to address this.  They will inform and inspire, and build a team of champions who can lead others in their field.”

The scholarships will be open to any applicants working in the public realm who have no formal design training, but who could use the experience to help bring knowledge of good design to their own work.  Applications are invited in a number of areas: urban streets; highways and public squares; urban parks and green spaces; public space design for disabled people and those with other access issues; public space projects delivered by or working with local communities, and public space issues in large scale regeneration projects.

The scholarships, which will be for trips of approximately six weeks, are designed to allow scholars to increase their understanding of delivering and managing well-designed public space. Scholarships will be made in the form of grants designed to cover travel and living expenses for the period of study and applicants will propose their own study programme which they will then be able to develop with the help of a CABE Space mentor.

Applications can be made online by visiting http://www.cabe.org.uk/scholarships. The closing date is November 30th 2007 at 5pm.  Selected candidates will be called for interview in January and successful applicants will be notified at the end of January 2008.
