The Civic TrustUrban regeneration charity, The Civic Trust, which manages the Green Flag Award scheme, is urging people to leave their cars behind and take to their local parks and green spaces in aid of World Environment Day on the weekend of June 3-4.
The theme for this year’s World Environment Day is Promise the Earth – making those lifestyle changes which will benefit the environment. The Civic Trust is asking people to make a conscious decision to leave the car at home and take to a nearby green space as often as they can, beginning with the first weekend in June.
There are 322 Green Flag Award winning sites across England and Wales and many of these will be putting on events this weekend, encouraging people to get involved in fun, environment friendly activities – much more enjoyable than sitting in a traffic jam on the motorway going nowhere.
On Saturday, 3 June, Everton Park Nature Garden in Liverpool will be open between 11am and 3pm promoting environmental things to enjoy and Park Bridge Heritage Centre in Tameside will be holding its 21st national young pavement artist competition focusing on Rainforests. Sandhurst Memorial Park in Bracknell Forest will be the venue for a Family Fun day. There will be opportunities to try a variety of activities and sports while gaining valuable lifestyle advice.
On Sunday, 4 June, you can rock to the sounds of Africa at Rock Park in Halton and enjoy a live performance of music and dancing by genuine Zulu Warriors at Elmhurst Park in Woodbridge. For a more hair-raising experience, dare to hold some slippery customers, courtesy of Wirral Herpetology Society, at Walton Hall Gardens in Warrington.
All these and a host of other activities will be taking place at Green Flag Award winning sites across the country. Take a look at the events guide on the Civic Trust’s dedicated website at: http://www.greenflagaward.org.uk
“People who habitually use their car to visit major attractions at the weekend often don’t realise they have their own open air attractions on their doorsteps.” says Caroline Williams, Green Flag Award Marketing Manager. “Seek out and enjoy those quality green spaces near to your home and make http://www.greenflagaward.org.uk your first port of call.”
World Environment Day, commemorated each year on 5 June is one of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action.
