Green Flag Award

Urban regeneration charity, The Civic Trust, which manages the Green Flag Award scheme, is urging people to leave their cars behind and take to their local parks and green spaces in aid of World Environment Day this weekend.

There are 253 Green Flag Award winning sites across England and Wales and many of these will be putting on special events over the weekend, encouraging people to think about the environment and increase their awareness of the impact they have on it.

On Sunday, Green Flag Award winning Etherow Country Park in Stockport will be hosting an open day, offering visitors to try their hand at fishing, sailing, model boating, pond dipping and water testing. The fun takes place between 10am and 4pm.

On Saturday, 4 June, Green Pennant Award winner, Hattersley Community Garden in Tameside, Manchester, shows what can happen with a healthy dose of community spirit. Experience the pond, chicken run, rabbit enclosure, recycling centre and have the opportunity of purchasing some homegrown produce. This special market garden even has its own solar powered fountain!

As well as World Environment Day events, there will also be a host of activities taking place at Green Flag Award winning sites across the country. Take a look at the events calendar on the Civic Trust’s dedicated website at: http://www.greenflagaward.org.uk

“People who habitually use their car to visit major attractions at the weekend often don’t realise they have their own open air attractions on their doorsteps.’ says Paul Todd, the Green Flag Award’s Application Manager. ‘This is why World Environment Day will provide a perfect time to seek out and enjoy those little quality green spaces near to your home.”

World Environment Day, commemorated each year on 5 June is one of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action.
