Green Flag Award

Ninety-eight per cent of visitors captured in a survey have high opinions of Green Flag Award-winning Oakwell Hall Country Park in Kirklees borough.

The survey was carried out by NVQ students from Skelton Grange Environment Centre in Leeds.

The students, who are working towards a NVQ Level 2 in Environmental Conservation, surveyed nearly 200 people and discovered that most visitors are aged between 26 and 65 and that there are more women than men. The most popular activity is walking although family days out, dog walking, play areas and visiting the historic hall all featured strongly.

The country park was described as ‘good’, *very good* or ‘excellent’ by 97% of visitors and signage, access and parking all scored well with scores of 95%, 99% and 96% respectively for ratings of *good’, *very good* or ‘excellent’.  And 72% of dog walkers felt they were well catered for in the country park.

The findings will be used to demonstrate visitors views on the site and its value as a public facility to this year’s judges of the Green Flag Award scheme.  The 110-acre country park was been awarded a Green Flag Award for the last three years.

Councillor Liz Smaje, Kirklees Cabinet Member for Leisure and Neighbourhood Services, commented: “Oakwell Hall Country Park continues to be a vibrant place, full of activity and obviously well thought of by visitors.  This survey shows that the staff are clearly doing a great job and continue to deliver a great service with year on year improvements.”
