Youngsters get involved in previous events to Keep Wales Tidy

Fairy Glen Local Nature Reserve, a Green Pennant Award-winning site in Old Colwyn for the past three years, will be entered into this year’s Tidy Wales Week.

Monday, 25 June is the launch date of Keep Wales Tidy’s seven day nationwide clean up. Under the banner ‘Our Country - Our Problem’, volunteers will be encouraged to tackle litter-strewn rivers, beaches and communal areas.

Wales’ natural environment is important not only to people who live in Wales but also plays a key part in attracting visitors to Wales and enhancing their holiday experience. Figures show that the cost of removing litter in Wales currently stands at a staggering £40 million.

In 2006 a total of 30,000 people helped to collect over 11,000 bags of litter from almost 500 locations across Wales. This year, the organisers hope that at least 50,000 people will be getting their hands dirty for such a worthwhile cause.

Clifford Prout, of Old Colwyn Environment Federation which manages five Green Pennant Award sites including Fairy Glen, said: “Tidy Wales will provide us with posters to advertise the event, tabards and promotional items and the local authority will provide bags and gloves.

“We would be pleased to receive offers of assistance in our objective of cleaning up the reserve.”

As well as Fairy Glen, Min-y-Don Community Woodlands, and Tan-y-Coed Community Gardens, both Green Pennant Award sites managed by the federation will be entered for Tidy Wales Week.
