The gardens retain many historical features including sunken and herb gardens, and more recently built rock and heather gardens. Magnificent topiary includes a series of heraldic beasts to mark the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. Nursery, a walled kitchen garden and glass houses hark back to the house’s days as a private residence. The gardens have been open to the public since 1952 and have won many awards including in 1976 special commendation for their restoration
