Click here for winner's locationWaltham Abbey Gardens is an intriguing site filled with history and interest. The area provides an important and much loved green space to the town of Waltham Abbey; on visiting the site, you can dog walkers, picnickers, children playing, walkers, and anglers. Abbey Gardens has been an important area for worship dating back to the early 7th Century when the first church was constructed. Over the centuries, the site grew larger and larger culminating with an Abbey. The area is intrinsically connected to King Harold as it is the site it’s believed he was laid to rest after the Battle of Hastings 1066. Unfortunately, the church you see today is what’s left of the Abbey due to the dissolution by Henry VIII, causing the demise of the Abbey in 1540. The site is the focus of several events throughout the year starting with the church fete, then the churches together event, bringing together the churches of Waltham Abbey in a community event and culminating with the King Harold Day event attracting as many as 4000 visitors in celebration of the site and towns history. There is history and wildlife everywhere you look from the old orchard, moat, Gatehouse, Midnight Chapel to the Cornmill stream. The area is scattered with art pieces which celebrate its connections bringing extra interest to the visitor this makes Abbey Gardens a truly magical place that connects the visitor to the past, present and wildlife.
