Information about this open space

Birkenhead Park was Britain’s first publicly funded Municipal Park, is Joseph Paxton’s major contribution to the design of public parks and is registered Grade 1 in English Heritage’s Register of Historic Parks and Gardens. In 2004 an £11.3m restoration of the park began and this will be completed by mid 2008.The importance of the park as a heritage of national and international value, as well as an invaluable resource for the local community, has been the focus of the restoration project. From the outset the local authority and their partners have recognised the importance of ensuring the sustainability of the restoration project. To this end there has been additional revenue commitment from Wirral MBC in order to facilitate the development of a dedicated park team within Birkenhead Park. The team comprises a Park Manager, Gardens, Security and Ranger Teams who are currently working with a range of partners and stakeholders to deliver a 10 year Management Plan. This Plan will ensure community involvement, improved visitor services, improved standards of maintenance and improved security and community safety.A key element of this work has been the engagement of the local community and key stakeholders to ensure their involvement and sense of ownership in the future management and development of the park. Key to this has been the involvement of local schools and groups in annual programmes of events and activities based around community arts, local heritage and sports.
