Click here for winner's locationRock Park is a formal Park lying close to Runcorn Old Town. Used as a quarry in the nineteenth century, it was laid out as a park in the early 1920s with bowling greens, areas of woodland and a field for informal recreation. The present pavilion is home to the active Friends of Rock Park group, bowls teams and ranger-led events throughout the year. It is also the base for the on-site gardener and summer games attendant. The Friends Group has inspired local community spirit and transformed the open space into a vibrant park for all ages. The group helped to secure funds for park improvements totalling £250,000 to date from bodies including WREN and Sure Start. Facilities for young people include a Children’s Playground, a multi-games area including 5-a-side and basketball and a grass five-a-side pitch. A Teen area including Skate Ramps and a shelter are also provided. Fencing has formed a secure area for the bowling greens and allowed the creation of areas of horticultural interest around the Pavilion. Rock Park is accessible from the Runcorn Cycleway network and lies on the Mersey Valley Timberland Trail, which follows the North Cheshire sandstone ridge.
