Project Information

The project is a local community cafe situated in the heart of Chadderton Hall Park. The
cafe employs people from the local area including members from the Adult and
Community Services ( training into employment ) The cafe was formally a run down
bowling pavilion but has now been transformed into a thriving business and focal point
for the community.

The Cafeteria at Chadderton Hall Park opened in 2006. Formally a bowling pavilion, the
building was under used and in need of modernisation. Ex policeman and local business
man Mike Cuminiskey saw the potential in the building and a niche in the market. Once
planning permission was granted he set about transforming the derelict building into a
comfortable upmarket eating establishment. Two years on and the venture is riding the
crest of a wave. The park is equipped with a facility which caters for all the community,
providing fresh, locally sourced food at a reasonable price. The menu caters for all the
diverse cultures within the boundaries of Oldham.

There are 14 part time members of staff who are all local people. The building meets all
the requirements to conform with the Disability Discrimination Act including ramped
access and disabled toilets.

Since opening there has been a steady increase in visitor numbers and a marked decrease
in vandalism and anti social behaviour. The park has started to self police itself and we
believe this is down to the cafeteria.

Various groups have started to use the facility as a base to hold meetings. These include
Local Councillors who hold surgeries, Police Community Support Officers and the
Chadderton Hall Park Friends group who hold their meetings there.

The cafeteria also provides employment for 3 T.I.E. (training into employment) members
from the Adult and Community Services Department. This has led to a number of
members gaining full time employment, boosting their confidence and general well
being.
