Only 10 minutes walk from the city center is "Gütersloh's green living room": the city ??park with its botanical garden . The extensive route, the old trees , the proximity to the water on the river and pond make the city park Gütersloh a real gem - and has been for more than 100 years . And best of all, you can discover it for free and 365 days a year !
Town councillors agreed in 1908 to the motion of the city council that the city park should be laid out under the direction of the garden architect Friedrich Wilhelm Schoedder from Iserlohn (father of the painter - Paul Hermann Schoedder ), partly as a park, partly as a forest and in 1909 the park was officially opened to the public.
Schoedder planned the park as an English landscape garden with sight lines , lawns and tree plantings to create scenery, all in the style of the Lenné / Meyer landscape style.
In 1992, the city of Gütersloh completely renovated the garden. Outgoing areas were reconstructed on the basis of old plans or photographs, annoying changes that affected the harmony of the overall concept, reversed or redesigned the areas.
What began with designers and influencers including Friedrich-Wilhelm Schoedder, Paul Roehse and Karl Rogge now covers an area of around 25 hectares, which is the responsibility of the team from the Department of Green Areas in the city of Gütersloh. To support this work, the Förderkreis Stadtpark-Botanischer Garten has set itself the task. Especially in times of increasingly scarce public funds, it is our concern to contribute to preserve the city park in its beauty for all citizens and visitors.
