Information about this open space

Alum Chine is formed from a steep wooded valley rolling down to a Blue Flag winning beach.  The famous tropical gardens are terraced into the valley side and were originally laid out in the 1920’s and extensively restored in recent years.  The site offers shaded paths, a popular children’s play area, catering and bowls facilities at the adjacent Argyll Gardens.  Visitors and residents enjoy the tranquil atmosphere in the wooded chine and take in the magnificent sea views.  The ‘Treasure Island’ themed play area was inspired by author Robert Louis Stevenson who lived and wrote some of his most celebrated works in a house as the head of the chine.
