01702 215 743Developed in stages up to 1927 Southchurch Park contains the only remnant of the Great Western Mere, which was reclaimed in 1870. Today in the form of a lake it is divided in two with one part used for wildlife and the other for model boats. There are pitches for cricket and football, and tennis players are well served with four hard courts. There is also a bowling green, croquet lawn and Petanque Terrain. Young people are well catered for with a 5 a side and basket ball area and an enclosed playground. The Park has always housed examples of horticultural excellence, with shrubs, bedding displays and roses creating a more tranquil atmosphere in the south west of the park, where the cafĂ© offers refreshments all year round. During 2001-2002 new features were created in the Park, including a picnic area and an Ornamental Wildlife Garden. The garden, funded by Cory Environmental Trust, provides a practical demonstration of how to make the ‘normal’ urban garden more beneficial to wildlife.
