Information about this open space

Albert Park was donated to the people of Middlesbrough in 1868 by Henry Bolckow, one of the founders of the iron and steel industry on Teesside.  The Park covers an area of 30 hectares in the centre of Middlesbrough.  For many people in the town, the Park is their only convenient access to high quality open space.  Recreation and sporting facilities include boating and fishing on the lake, a visitor centre and cafe, tennis courts, bowling greens, croquet lawns and areas of open space for informal recreation and large events Middlesbrough Mela, Middlesbrough’s annual celebration of Sports, Arts, Culture, and Diversity was held in Albert Park for the twelfth year in July 2007 and was attended by 30,000 people throughout the day.  September 2004 saw the completion of a three year restoration scheme supported by Middlesbrough Council, the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Northumbrian Water Environmental Trust and the Friends of Albert Park.  The grant included a revenue element to allow the employment of a dedicated Park Manager and Community Park Ranger to maintain and develop the improvements.  The redevelopment has made a much needed capital investment in the fabric of the Park and has helped the people of Middlesbrough to rediscover one of their greatest community assets, their local Park.
