01394 383599The award winning Elmhurst Park has a magnificent and unique setting. On the one part, it overlooks the World Famous Sutton Hoo Burial Ground, and on the other, it is neatly sandwiched between the historic River Deben and the Town Centre. The land itself has a long history steeped in the history of the town and linked to the coming of the Railway. However, it was due to the generosity and foresight of Lord Woodbridge in the early 1930s, who purchased the land and gave it to the Town to be used in perpetuity as a public open space. During the intervening 60 years, the Park has come to be an important ‘green lung’ in the town centre, whilst retaining its charm as a ‘hidden garden’ due to the nature of its seclusion behind walls and fences. The Park itself has changed little since its creation, however the use of the Park has changed over the years. A wide variety of leisure activities are now provided for all ages ranging from the very young with the children’s play area, through to the solace of “Scouts Corner” much used by the older generation. Yet the Park also caters for families, with the extensive summer entertainment programme commencing with the Easter Egg Hunt. Elmhurst exists to be enjoyed by people of all ages, and the Park manages to fulfil the needs of the towns-folk, and inhabitants of the rural hinterland, whilst managing to retain its historic charm and importance.
