0151 907 8300Hough Green Park is just over 3.0 hectares and situated in west Widnes. It is typical of a small urban park with a well-defined boundary. The Park consists of formal lawns, a bowling green, a fully accessible pavilion, public toilets, tennis and basketball courts and children’s play area. In 2000 a major refurbishment of the children’s play area was carried out as part of the Governments ‘Surestart’ programme. A new toddler and junior playground was provided which has led to visibly increased use of the park. Further investment was acquired through planning gain and in 2003, a tennis court was moved centrally to the park as a multi-use games area. This was done in direct response to requests from residents on Mayfield Avenue to mitigate the nuisance of tennis and footballs continually being retrieved from adjacent gardens. The Park centres on its role as a recreational facility for those in the local community by encouraging people to participate in a diverse range of events and activities provided by the parks’ staff. Recently, the old nursery area was developed to provide horticultural skills to those on a Supported Employment Scheme. Through this assisted training scheme, some participants have achieved level 1 NVQ qualifications.
