01372279083Farthing Downs & New Hill is one of seven City Commons on the urban fringe of North Surrey and South London. It is part of the 4,250 hectares of open spaces, parks and gardens in and around London, owned and protected by the City of London Corporation as part of its commitment to sustaining a world class city. Farthing Downs is managed for the use and enjoyment of the public and for the conservation of wildlife and historic landscape. Farthing Downs is 61 hectares of chalk grassland with patches of trees and shrubs bordered by hedges. It is complemented by the 34 hectares of scrub and ancient woodland found on neighbouring New Hill. Ancient banks, burial grounds and mounds show a human presence since the Stone Age. Today visitors enjoy the colourful wild flower meadows of special scientific importance. People and wildlife benefit from the cattle and sheep grazing in this ancient landscape. Farthing Downs & New Hill is managed with the active involvement of the local community. Rangers patrol the site to ensure the safety of visitors and work with volunteers and contractors to protect the open space from harm. Many people volunteer their time and skills to help look after this tranquil area. School children and other visitors are encouraged to learn about the site, its management and importance through a programme of educational activities. This inclusive approach has developed a sense of ownership, pride and responsibility towards Farthing Downs.
