01372279083Kenley Common is one of seven City Commons located in the urban fringe of North Surrey and South London. It is part of the 4,250 hectares of open spaces, parks and gardens in and around London, owned and protected by the City of London Corporation as part of its commitment to sustaining a world class city. Kenley Common is a unique resource managed for the use and enjoyment of the public and for the conservation of wildlife and historic landscape. Kenley Common is 56-hectares of chalk grassland and woodland surrounding a former Battle of Britain airfield used for gliding. Traditional practices of making hay, hedge laying and cattle and sheep grazing in flower-rich meadows provide visitors with a window into the past. A summer stroll reveals a swaying sea of colourful wildflowers, a natural ‘palate’ that provides a haven for butterflies and birds. Steep chalky tracks, shady woodland walks and springy down provide a variety of walks for local people. Kenley Common is managed with the active involvement of the local community. Rangers patrol the site to ensure the safety of visitors and work with local volunteers and contractors to protect the open space from harm. Many people volunteer their time and skills to help look after this tranquil corner of South London. School children and other visitors are encouraged to learn about the Common, its management and importance through a programme of educational activities. This inclusive approach has developed a sense of ownership, pride and responsibility towards Kenley Common.
