Information about this open space

Spring Park is one of seven City Commons located in the urban fringe of North Surrey and South London.  It is part of the 4,250 hectares of open spaces, parks and gardens in and around London, owned and protected by the City of London Corporation as part of its commitment to sustaining a world class city.  Spring Park is a unique resource managed for the use and enjoyment of the public and for the conservation of wildlife and historic landscape.  Spring Park is 21 hectares of mature woodland and wildflower meadow on clay soils capped by pebbles and sand.  Managed for centuries as coppice producing stakes and fuel, Spring Park is now enjoyed by dog walkers, joggers and kite fliers.  Springs arise amongst the trees and meander along ditches into a pond frequented by dragonflies.  Bluebells, wood anemone and yellow archangel create a pastiche across the woodland floor and the site supports healthy populations of insects and wild birds.  Spring Park is managed with the active involvement of the local community.  Rangers patrol the site to ensure the safety of visitors and work with local volunteers and contractors to protect the open space from harm.  Many people volunteer their time and skills to help look after this tranquil corner of South London.  School children and other visitors are encouraged to learn about Spring Park, its management and importance through a programme of educational activities.  This inclusive approach has developed a sense of ownership, pride and responsibility towards Spring Park.
