Information about this open space

In the 1960’s the rive Nene valley near the market town of Oundle had become a scar on the countryside - gravel extraction had left a desolate landscape.  Now 40 years later Barnwell Country Park is a beautiful place, a haven for wildlife and people since 1971.  Gradually over that time, the rangers have worked to create a number of habitats such as meadows, woods, lakes and marches, that now support a wealth of wildlife and a range of services and facilities that make the park popular with regulars and a fantastic family day out.  In recent years the park has continued to strive to further improve to the point where it won its first green flag award in 2004, any every year since.  The park has improved its accessibility to all sections of the community, developed its environmental sustainability and created better facilities which continue to attract more visitors, yet maintain the attractive nature of the site.  All this work has been underpinned by the staffs belief in best practice, customer focus, attention to detail and high standards which make it a wonderful, welcoming country park where people return again and again.
