Information about this open space

Covering 140ha, Ecclesall Woods Local Nature Reserve is the largest semi-natural woodland in South Yorkshire, in what is the most wooded City in Britian. Some 300-400,000 visits a year are made to the woodland, utilising the 15km of public footpaths and bridleways, with visitors able to enjoy a remarkably rich heritage including wonderful displays of bluebells, and abundant archaeology ranging from pre-historic field systems to mediaeval charcoal hearths. With the support of the Friends of Ecclesall Woods and others, the woods are cherished by the people of Sheffield. Since 2006, the sawmill site has returned to City Council management and is gradually developing a City wide reputation for showcasing woodlands and wood, whilst providing a focus for visitor facilities and information, training and a starting point for education and life long learning in the wider woodland
