The Green Flag Award scheme, managed by the Civic Trust, is the national standard for parks and green spaces. Winners vary from Victorian parks, such as the Arboretum, in Monks Road, to nature reserves, country parks and cemeteries. Sites must be judged to be welcoming, safe and well maintained with the strong involvement of the local community. The Victorian park, which was restored to its former glory in 2003, four years ago became the first place in Lincolnshire to achieve Green Flag status since the award scheme began in 1996. Steve Bird, head of community services at the City Of Lincoln Council, said: “This is an excellent achievement and once again recognises the work of the Council and the Arboretum Advisory Group in their efforts to achieve continued improvements. We are only too aware of the affect on people’s lives that good quality open spaces can have and the Arboretum acts as a shining example of what can be achieved with sustained effort. “I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those involved, including those using the park, for their ongoing support. Only by working together can we continue to build on the success we have enjoyed so far.”
