Information about this open space

Southampton’s historic Central Parks cover 21 hectares and are listed Grade II on English Heritage’s Register of Historic Parks and Gardens. They are made up of 5 parks established between 1854 and 1866 on ancient fields known as Lammas Lands.  The parks are a much valued resource for both residents and visitors and their location provides a green oasis in the heart of the city and are a symbol of civic pride. Central Parks benefited from a £4.5m restoration project assisted by the Heritage Lottery Fund in 2001. The historic features of the parks have been restored in a contemporary style, the facilities have been upgraded and new landscaping and artwork introduced. The restoration responded to public demands for improvements whilst continuing to celebrate the history of these much loved parks. Facilities in the parks now include hard and grass tennis courts, basket ball court, putting green, play area, skate park, Parkafe and toilets, cricket pitches and the bandstand.  Our Central Parks Ranger hosts many walks and talks throughout the year with themes ranging from ‘In the time of Titanic’ to ‘Putting the bananas to bed’ and the ‘Sensory trail’. The parks also have a regular, wide ranging programme of events with something to appeal to everyone such as art in the park, youth and cultural festivals and music in the bandstand.
