Information about this open space

This popular, welcoming town centre park is located on either side of Sherwood Avenue in Newark, Nottinghamshire and contains a wide range of sports and play facilities including a children’s play area, floodlit multi-use games area, skate park, floodlit tennis courts and a bowling green. The park dates back to 1922 with an open-air swimming pool being built in 1934. The pool eventually closed in 1976 and the area was then developed as a public park with the old swimming pool tank being transformed into a sunken multi-use games area. . A new sports pavilion has recently been constructed between the bowling green and tennis courts to provide changing and social facilities for bowlers and tennis players.  The bowling green at Sherwood Avenue is leased to, and maintained, by Newark Northern Bowls Club and used by 2 other clubs as their base. Newark Lawn Tennis Club also makes use of the site for coaching, practice and matches, with the courts being the only floodlit ones in Newark. The District Council seeks to maintain Sherwood Avenue Park to a high standard and in recognition of these standards and the involvement of the local community the park has been awarded a prestigious Green Flag Award for every year since 2005.
