0115 9152789Lenton Recreation Ground was described in 1926 by the author Mellors as, the nearest approach to a village green that we have. After a period of decline, the park is enjoying a renaissance, fulfilling its function as the neighbourhoods own village green. Its two bowling greens remain well used by local clubs as well as the County Ladies Team and the new children’s play is a firm favourite! The development of the park is guided by a Consultation Group managed by the Dunkirk and Lenton Partnership Forum and the City Council. Since the award of a Green Flag in 2005, the park has continued to improve with the award of further Neighbourhood Renewal Funding for a new basketball area. Efforts are now underway to secure funding for a major replanting programme to replace the tired and worn out shrub beds. Recent events have included an innovative ‘Health and Wellbeing’ programme for the over 50s delivered in partnership with the Primary Care Trust and the planting of 5,000 daffodils for a new Marie Curie ‘Field of Hope’. The park was selected as a pilot for the CABE Space Place Consultation Tool and this should aid future developments. Lenton’s strength lies in the reintroduction of a dedicated (and enthusiastic!) member of staff, its design, and the close involvement of the community with the development of its green space. Despite its compact size, the park offers a tranquil oasis in the heart of a city neighbourhood.
