01242 250019When the Hatherley Court Estate came up for sale in 1934 nine acres of the land was acquired by the council. The purchased land was relaid as a park and recreation ground and was opened by the Mayor of Cheltenham on 29th April 1939 as the new Hatherley Park. It was to become ‘famous’ as the park where a disillusioned Wendy Craig used to daydream by the lake in the BBC1 comedy Butterflies. The park has two play areas, both popular with families - one for toddlers and young children and a multi activity facility for older children - plus a basketball post and junior football pitch. The original lake and central path layout remain. The main path with its borders of shrubs and mature trees provides a ‘figure of eight’ circuit with eye catching views across to nearby hills. Thanks to support from the Friends group and their Living Spaces and Peoples Places awards the park now has a wildlife pond and interpretation panels plus two benches carved out of a felled Chestnut tree that depict pond minibeasts and a ‘giant’ frog.
