Information about this open space

A wonderful Edwardian pocket park in the heart of York which offers space for play, sports and informal recreation.  Glen Gardens is a valuable asset for local residents. It is a multifunctional recreational space that meets the needs of local people today. Although small in size, it offers visitors the opportunity for peaceful reflection, good quality bowls, tennis and basketball facilities and a play area designed to suit all ages. Since its opening in 1915, the well designed layout has remained much the same. 2005 saw the refurbishment of the Tennis courts and the addition of a basket ball court to reflect local needs. The layout of the gardens gives a feeling of seclusion from the busy streets outside, whilst open views within the Gardens provides a safe environment for visitors of all ages. A park attendant is on duty during opening hours throughout the spring and summer months adding to the sense of security as well as keeping the Gardens clear of litter and working with local dog walkers to minimise dog fouling. The Gardens provide a good environment for local schools to take advantage of the free environmental education programme run by the City of York Council. Further improvements to the environmental sustainability of the site have been made with the addition of a composting area for all of the suitable green waste generated in the park and the erection of bird boxes.
