Information about this open space

Set in the heart of the Nene Valley, Irchester Country Park offers something for all the family to enjoy.  Whether it’s a gentle stroll under towering trees, participating in one of the many exciting events or enjoying a picnic on the dog-free meadow the park offers a wealth of experiences.  Previously, the park was an iron stone quarry - the “hills and dales” landscape a testament to its heritage - but when it opened in 1971 nature, and the locals, had reclaimed it for their own.  However, its history goes back much further; the stunning “Wembley Pit” shows geology dating back 165 million years and fragments of fossilised shells are abundant in the exposed limestone across the site - a real Jurassic Park!  The park is also home to Britain’s only meter gauge collection of steam and diesel locomotives (www.ingrt.freeuk.com) and it has won national awards for being Dog Friendly and ensuring its woodlands are managed in a balanced sustainable way.  This has only been possible due to the dedicated, hard work of the staff, volunteers and partners.
