01695 585169Situated on the western slopes of Ashurst Beacon, to the east of Skelmersdale, Lancashire, this tranquil and picturesque park is the main countryside facility owned and run by West Lancashire District Council. The rolling meadows, woodlands and ponds are ideal for quiet walks and picnics, with panoramic views of the Pennine Hills, North Wales and the Lancashire Coastal Plain. For the more active, horse riding, orienteering, off road cycling and cross country running are also popular activities for both individuals and local clubs. Beacon Park Visitor Centre offers bar and catering facilities, and function room, as well as servicing the adjacent golf course and driving range which are available for all to use. Next to the Visitor Centre are picnic and activity areas, public toilets, an information point, and the Countryside Rangers Office. The Rangers carry out a wide range of activities around the park. They patrol the park area and undertake practical conservation and maintenance work to improve the park, ably assisted by volunteer rangers, for whom new recruits are always welcome. An annual programme of events and activities is run, including country shows, guided walks, sports events, nature rambles, and a childrens Junior Ranger Club. The Ranger Service also produces a range of publicity material on the Park, and other countryside facilities managed by West Lancashire District Council. Local schools and colleges are actively encouraged to visit the park. Whether for pond dipping, minibeast hunts, wildlife surveys or landscape studies, increasing awareness and care of the local environment.
