020 8894 2677Bedfont Lakes is an attractive and diverse 188 hectare country park situated on the western fringes of London. Created in the early 1990s from a former landfill site, it is recognised as a national exemplar of landscape restoration on previously contaminated and degraded land. Its location, less than half a mile from Heathrow Airport, does not detract from its tranquillity and beauty. The landscape includes lakes, ponds, reedbeds, meadows and woodland that can be explored on a network of well-maintained paths, accessible to wheelchairs and pushchair users. The park features a nature reserve and trails, fishing lake, orienteering course, playground, trim trail, dipping ponds and picnic areas, as well as facilities for walkers, dog owners and cyclists. Nature conservation is central to the management philosophy in keeping with its Local Nature Reserve status and the park supports a wide range of wildlife, including several important species, including Bittern (in winter), several rare insects and one of Londons largest tern colonies. There are regular public events, including an annual country fair organised by the site-based rangers, who also lead educational activities within the park. An information centre offers a range of materials on local activities and features of interest and there are numerous information boards covering a variety of themes around the park. The stakeholder groups include local councillors, wildlife groups, and businesses who, together with the Friends of Bedfont Lakes, input both formally and informally into the parks management planning processes.
