Sarah DanielThe Lawn is situated within the heart of Sutton in Ashfield, within north Nottinghamshire, providing a central recreational facility. The park provides great facilities such as tennis courts, bowling greens, a skate area and multi use games area, as well as two children’s play areas and a ‘Tree Route.’ A new pavilion is due to be constructed during 2006 which will provide a focal point for the site including public toilets, a cafĂ©, meeting room and accommodation for on site staff, as well as a wonderful resource for the local community and park Friends group. The park is comprised of grassed areas with woodland and avenues of trees. Mill Lake, used by the local angling club is located at the south of the site and is fed by the town’s watercourse, known locally as the ‘River Idle.’ The Lawn also has a nature area which is due to be designated as a Local Nature Reserve during 2006. The Lawn encompasses the grounds of the former Sutton Hall, built as the residence of a cotton spinning mill. Sutton Hall and most of the Mill complex no longer exist, but the Grade 2 listed Mill ruins, (now converted for residential use) and adjacent lake form a focal feature of the area today. The park hosts Ashfield Show; the largest free festival in the East Midlands, taking place during the first week in August and offering a wide range of attractions from exhibitions and demonstrations to a fairground and music stage.
