Information about this open space

Golden Acre Park is a regular favourite with families of all ages and consists of over 52 hectares of gardens and woodlands stretching out from a central lake.  A good day out for visitors is provided and there is a range of walks from gentle strolls to longer rambles.  A distinctive feature of the park is the area surrounding the lake and adjacent pinetum where the local flora is encouraged.  The lake is home for many species of wildfowl (indigenous and migratory).  Many horticultural features have been created including an extensive limestone and sandstone rocks gardens, a large display house with a mountain stream, alpines together with the National Collection of Lilacs, a miniature railway garden, a cottage garden, heather garden, an arboretum, Rhododendrons and Azaleas that provides the park with a strong horticultural emphasis.  A notable feature is the demonstration garden for vegetables, flowers and horticultural demonstrations.  Blenheim Courtyard has plants of a more tender nature and some have been selected for their fragrance and leaf texture.  Also there are examples of plants more suitable for growing in large pots or containers.  Enjoy the summer bands in the park with entertainment from some of the region’s leading brass bands.  From the Bakery Coffee House with its extensive menu and new patio, there are good views across the park. With a scree garden in the foreground leading down to the ornamental pond and fountain, beyond which is a grassed area and the pinetum.
