Information about this open space

Hastings Country Park and Nature Reserve is the largest area of open space in the Borough of Hastings and is one of the foremost natural areas in the UK.  The site is owned and managed by Hastings Borough Council and boasts both national and international designations as a Site of Special Scientific Interest and Special Area of Conservation due to its unique wildlife and geology.  Renowned for its spectacular scenery, the site is one of the best-loved visitor attractions of the Borough and the surrounding area.  The extensive network of footpaths encourages visitors to roam the hills, glens and woodlands to experience the unique countryside and coastal scenery offered by this wonderful site. The site has two accessible trails, new map boards and clear way marking to help visitors find their way around.  The Council has undertaken an ambitious programme of habitat restoration and farmland management aimed at encouraging wildlife and reversing the decline in our wildlife associated with farmland areas. The new management is already showing results with many species of birds returning to the area after years of absence, including a pair of breeding barn owls.  A dedicated staff team and active Friends Group implement site management and develop projects to improve the site. This year the Friends have organised a programme of events and walks throughout the year to run alongside the Ranger led community events.  News and information on this and other wildlife and sites in Hastings is available through the Wild Hastings web site, www.wildhastings.gov.uk.
