Much of the park is a Site of Special Scientific Interest renowned for its flora and fauna, including examples of nationally rare plant the greater yellow rattle and many species of orchid. Community involvement and recreation are promoted through the work of the warden, who implements a detailed management plan with a partnership approach of contractors, Croydon BTCV, Downlands Countryside Management Project, Old Surrey Downs Project and local farmers. Significant recent achievements include the introduction of conservation grazing, a dormouse monitoring project, coppice management, hedge-laying and charcoal production. The site is served by several walking routes, including the London Loop and the Downlands Circular Walk, and several kilometres of high-quality horse rides.
