Information about this open space

Plymouth Hoe was originally laid out as a formal park in the early 1870s and is an internationally recognised landmark drawing in visitors from far and wide.  Sitting in the spectacular natural harbour of Plymouth Sound, the Hoe has a picturesque backdrop few parks can rival.  Thousands come each year to see where Drake calmly finished his game of bowls as the Armada came into view.  Smeaton’s Tower, which once guarded the treacherous Eddystone Reef, now stands near the Hoe promenade and gives visitors a panoramic view of the park and out to sea.  The Hoe is the oldest and most prominent public space in the city and offers activities for people of all ages, such as bowling, mini-golf, fun runs and guided walks. It also has areas of reflection and informal relaxation including its sensory and peace gardens and open grassed areas.  It hosts a number of local and national events throughout the year from Lord Mayor’s Day and the Plymouth Half Marathon to the British Fireworks Championships and the British Powerboat Grand Prix.  Plymouth City Council’s Parks Services department works hard to maintain the Hoe’s gardens and facilities to the highest standards and promote sustainability, from recycling and green composting to encouraging environmentally friendly commerce.  It is also working to further develop educational and environmental initiatives for schools, community groups and local interest groups through its community liaison officer.  The Hoe was awarded the Green Flag for the third time in 2007.
