Information about this open space

The Arboretum is the premier tree collection within the County and one of the few large green spaces within the city centre.  There has been large investment (over £1 million ) over the last 5 years, following a successful Heritage lottery bid and it is now in a position to consolidate its Green Flag Status.  Opened in 1852, the Arboretum came about following the Nottingham Inclosures Act of 1845.  The site contains over 1000 specimen trees and shrubs, planted in family groups, along with a host of other features that make this site unique within the city. Selected site features include: 4 Russian Cannons, (donated in 1857) a Chinese Bell tower (built 1861 and restored in 2003), the only remaining public aviary in the city, award winning horticultural features (Dell garden in 2004), Dahlia Boarder and Winter Garden, to name but a few. The Bandstand, an important local feature, was moved from the Castle site in 1881 and is one of a number of listed features on site.  Well used throughout the year, the Arboretum is ideally placed as a site for contemplation, away from the hustle and bustle of the city Centre. There is a good mixture of events on site, ranging from small wedding photo shoots, to big events like the annual Gay Pride event. Easily accessible from both the city centre and the wider community via the tram network that runs alongside, the park plays a vital role for the local and wider community.
