01744 456122Downall Croft was until recently an underused piece of land situated in a small village area to the north of St. Helens with incidence of antisocial behaviour being high. The Council together with the Groundwork Trust and the local community through the Tenants and Residents Association took it on board to look to improve this green space and to provide a facility that the local community would need and be proud to own. Following on from the initial Consultation with all ages of the local community the Groundwork Trust produced a Master plan for the site and agreement was sought to develop the land. Through a submission to the Countryside Agencies Doorstep Green external funding was sought and awarded to the community led project which resulted in the whole of the site being improved in 2004 and being part of the National Doorstep Green Programme. Access points designed by local school children leads visitors onto a safe, clean and well maintained site with the area now boasting a fenced off children’s equipped play area, basket ball hoop, seating, lighting, pathways leading to grassed areas which have been planted with trees and shrubs to add diversity to the site and to attract increased bird and wildlife into the area. The local school children and Rangers have also have been busy planting spring flowering bulbs to add further variety and colour to the site.
