Formed from a patchwork of woodlands, old pastures and reclaimed colliery the park offers a wealth of educational and recreational experiences for the communities of West Yorkshire. Visitors can enjoy the Nature Trail through woods, wildflower meadows and river valleys and see the seven ponds. With an equestrian arena, bridleways for horses and several miles of footpaths, some of which is wheelchair –accessible; there is plenty here for everyone. Close to the Hall, visitors can explore the restored walled garden, arboretum, orchard or wildlife garden. The newly refurbished countryside centre and children’s play area are a popular place for families to begin their visit to the 110 acre park. Oakwell’s onsite education team has been repeatedly awarded the prestigious Sandford Award for excellence in environmental education. Each year the two hundred thousand plus visitors are informed and educated about the heritage, environment and conservation on the site. The events programme attracts over two hundred thousand visitors a year, with innovative activities from the Autumn festival, watercolour workshops, digital photography to Civil War re-enactments. Guided walks, environmentally themed activities in school holidays and our Summer fair mean there is always something to see and do at Oakwell. The Hall itself, rich with civil war connections and associations with the Bronte family offers a fascinating insight into the lives of a Yorkshire ‘well to do family’ in the late seventeenth century.
